Running tourism is a relatively new concept in the travel business, although people have been doing it for years. Funny how we have to give something a name all the time. Running tourism is a name that has been coined as businesses have been set up around the world offering sightseeing tours and holidays for people who want to get out of the car or off the bus, and see the wonders of the city or countryside under human power.
It’s a fine concept actually, but there are still relatively few companies out there offering this type of guided running or jogging tour. Why? Well, it is not for everyone, a lot of people ‘hate’ running, but there are certainly enough runners out there to make the concept a very attractive proposition to those who are willing to put in the effort. To run a running tours company, you’ve kind of got to like running, or know people who do. This makes it a reasonably good barrier to entry for a lot of people to start such a business. And depending on the type of tours you are prepared to offer, you can make the barrier even greater. Longer tours, different terrains, seminars and running holidays in the middle of nowhere? This appeals a lot to many runners, but not so much to the couch potato who can’t even run up the stairs at home.
And running is a sustainable and eco-friendly way to see the city. Fuelled by water and a few snacks, the body is a machine designed to run, so why not put it to good use and explore the world around you.
